International Asclepiad Society
The International Asclepiad Society exists to encourage the study and knowledge of the plants of the family Asclepiadaceae (commonly known as ascleps, or in the USA as milkweeds).
The following notes are designed to inform you about the Society, and the various services available to members.

The International Asclepiad Society (IAS) came into being in 1976 to bring together anyone interested in growing and studying members of the plant family Asclepiadaceae. This is a large group of plants, and inevitably interest has centred around the succulents: Stapelia, Caralluma, Huernia and other Stapeliads, as well as Ceropegia, Hoya, etc. although other members of the family are not neglected.
In keeping with the latest taxonomical ideas, the family Apocynaceae was added to the scope of the society in 2000. This means principally Adenium and Pachypodium, but other plants in this family are also covered.
The Society aims to increase available knowledge about all aspects of cultivation, ecology and correct naming of Asclepiads and the Apocynaceae. It also aims to provide opportunity for the free exchange of information between members and to increase the number of species that are available in cultivation.
About a third of the members live in the UK, a third in mainland Europe and a third in the USA or other countries. This strong international membership greatly enhances the exchange of ideas and information.
Whilst the Society was originally founded in the United Kingdom, it now enjoys international membership with over 30 different nationalities from the five continents. Membership of the Society
is open to anyone. At present our total membership exceeds 350 individuals and libraries.
Members will receive an introductory Handbook on joining and thereafter will receive our journal, Asklepios, three times per subscription year. New members are welcomed
throughout the year and will be sent any previously published issues for that year.
Annual Membership Fees for 2012 (Asklepios 113 - 115) are as follows;

Members may pay in their local currency to one of our National Representatives (see following list) who regularly forward Subscriptions to the Society.” The journals contain much information about asclepiads which would otherwise not be available to the collector. Articles vary from aspects of cultivation, description of plants in the wild and in cultivation, to more detailed problems of plant identification and ecology. The vast majority of articles are illustrated with colour photographs.
The Society has both a Slide Bank and a Library, these are concerned mostly with stapeliads and ceropegiads. In both cases, duplicate copies can be obtained at cost price from the librarians. For reasons of copyright these services are available to members only for the purposes of their personal research. With around two thousand slides and an even larger number of papers, the Society possesses an enormous fund of information.
As a contribution to the introduction to and maintenance of species in cultivation, the Society publishes annual Seed Lists. These are issued to Members Only. and are available on request from the Seed Bank Secretary. They are probably the world's finest source of Asclepiad seed, bringing together donations derived from carefully pollinated plants as well as much habitat collected seed.
